Vaccine Storage Wars

Health & Education

As a society we have come a long way since the year since COVID so dramatically entered our lives. After nearly ten months in lockdown, with vaccines being rolled out, it’s beginning to seem like there is a light at the end of the tunnel. The speed at which as a race we have developed the vaccines is simply astounding –  the next challenge will be distribution.

Each variant of the COVID vaccine must be kept at sub-zero temperatures; Pfizer/BioNTech at -70C and Moderna at -20C. Something which more than 2/3 of the population cannot easily access, warns DHL one of the worlds leading distribution businesses.

Businesses which can step up to support this supply chain will be duly rewarded. As an example, Panasonic recently received an influx of requests from European & American logistics firms to trial their cold storage solution.

“There is a serious shortage of freezer boxes even as the vaccine rollout has started globally,” Shinya Kojima, chief engineer at Panasonic’s appliance unit, said in an interview. “We’ve already received so many inquiries from all over the world including Japan, the US, Singapore, France, South Korea and China.”.

In the far-east, Chinese appliance producer Haier were the first to market with a complete solution. Panasonic, the Japanese electronics firm is hot on their heels, having adapted their freezer technology to store the Pfizer/BioNtech vaccine. As soon as this solution is up and running, there will be immediate demand, with Japan rearing to begin distribution of Pfizer’s solution.

Both Haier and Panasonic have been handsomely rewarded for growth in their core business areas with both of the stock prices having doubled since March lows.

Although the pandemic has interrupted many companies, it’s refreshing to see it opening new doors for those able to support the world’s retaliation against the virus. If you happen to be operating in the space and are considering a capital raise to support your ambitions- give us a call.
