Online sales, the demand for sustainable packaging and ESG awareness

Thanks to Food & Drink companies, particularly those that have had to pivot towards B2C (home deliveries),  there is a growing demand for, and continued innovation in, environmentally friendly packaging solutions.

Amcor’s development of a recyclable retort pouch, which also ensures longer-shelf life and minimisation of food waste, is just one example of this.

The awareness is two-fold, both consumer demand for their food and drink packaging being sourced responsibly but also the increasing awareness amongst owner-managed companies of ‘ESG’ (‘Environmental Social and Corporate Governance’).

In this case, the environment part is becoming more prolific with company website statements but also owner-managed businesses tweaking processes, procedures, procuring and being seen to do something rather than nothing.

This is also important from a fund raising perspective. Several Venture Capital and debt funds alike, increasingly have requirements that the companies they are investing in should have given some thought to ESG. Those companies need to be able to show that they have acted in this regard, processes are in place and a plan for the future.

Food & Drink and manufacturing are core segments here at Polestar, so naturally we are excited by the developments in this space and the efforts packaging and label companies up and down the UK are making to support both consumer, manufacturers and ultimately the environment.
